Computer Hardware Demanufacturing and Recycling Equipment Training

The NDCEE had designed a demanufacturing/recycling facility in Texas. Once the prototype was validated, they were handing the operation over to Lone Star Disposal in Texas. All of the machinery and operations were new, so they also wanted training to go along with the package to Lone Star.

The challenge with this program was that the government wanted a web-based training, but they wanted it done start to finish in a few months, on a low budget. There were no fast tools at the time like Storyline or Captivate. Most things required HTML, Flash, Authorware, or similar so would take longer or cost more. So I just built it in PowerPoint and had it run like a WBT program, with hot spots for buttons, graphic selections, and navigation.

Training covered safety, flow, pre-start checks, operations, changeover, shutdown, and maintenance. After the WBT, operators were certified by their supervisor on each piece of equipment, who worked from a checklist of steps.

So, while it’s not a technically complex project, it’s a good example of when less is more. This made the client happy because they got the training they wanted in the time they needed it, and it functioned the way they specified and served its purpose.
